Amazon Sponsored Products

Sponsored Products

What are Sponsored Products?

Sponsored Products are the most widely used ad type on Amazon. They blend seamlessly with organic search results and account for the large majority of Amazon ad spend. These are the "bread and butter" of Amazon PPC.

Where Sponsored Products Appear:

1. Search Results Pages (Most Important)

  • Top of Search: First 3-4 positions before organic results (highest visibility)
  • Middle of Search: Mixed within organic results (best CTR-to-cost ratio)
  • Bottom of Search: After organic results (lowest cost, good for testing)

💡 Worth knowing: Top of search draws a large share of all clicks, and costs correspondingly more per click than the other placements.

2. Product Detail Pages

  • "4-Star and Above" section: Under Buy Box (premium placement)
  • "Products related to this item": Middle of page
  • "Sponsored products related to this item": Lower on page
  • "Frequently bought together": Cross-sell opportunity

Three Types of Targeting:

Automatic Campaign Match Types - Complete Beginner's Guide:

What is an Automatic Campaign? Think of it as hiring Amazon as your keyword research assistant. You tell Amazon your product, and they show your ads to searches they think are relevant. It's like fishing with a net instead of a single hook - you catch everything and then sort out what's valuable.

The 4 Automatic Match Types Explained:

1. Close Match - Your Direct Competition

What Amazon targets: Searches very similar to your product

Example for yoga mat:

  • "yoga mat"
  • "exercise mat"
  • "workout mat"
  • "fitness mat"

Conversion Rate: Highest (5-15%) because shoppers know exactly what they want

Strategy: Bid highest here - these are your money makers!

2. Loose Match - Related but Broader Searches

What Amazon targets: Broader category searches

Example for yoga mat:

  • "home gym equipment"
  • "pilates accessories"
  • "exercise equipment for women"
  • "workout gear"

Conversion Rate: Medium (2-5%) because shoppers are still exploring options

Strategy: Moderate bids - test which broader terms work

3. Substitutes - Alternative Products

What Amazon shows your ad on: Competitor product pages

Example for yoga mat:

  • Other yoga mat product pages
  • Exercise mat listings
  • Similar priced fitness accessories

Conversion Rate: Good (3-8%) because shoppers are ready to buy your category

Strategy: Target competitors with worse reviews or higher prices

4. Complements - Products That Go Together

What Amazon shows your ad on: Related but different products

Example for yoga mat:

  • Yoga blocks
  • Yoga straps
  • Water bottles
  • Workout clothes

Conversion Rate: Lower (1-3%) but great for brand awareness

Strategy: Low bids, use for cross-selling opportunities
